AMERICA-THE GOOD LIFE-Notes and thoughts on Lyndon B.Johnson.
"Men come together in cities in order to live, but they remain together in order to live the good life." Aristotle.
"Our society will never be great until our cities are great.Today the frontier of imagination and innovation is inside those cities and not beyond their borders."-President Lyndon B.Johnson 1964.
He goes on:
"It will be the task of your generation to make the American city a place where future generations will come, not only to live, but live the good life." LBJ.
America should be living the good life. Our cities should be together to do so.Yet we have changed from seeing this vision to seeing a disruptive one. Where anger not understanding emerged.Where being a great country is offensive to being a society that rather riots and destroys things.
President Johnson honestly sought a Great Society even thru the midst of a dark war. A great effective leader in the senate of getting things he wanted couldn't get as president. And that war ended his presidency.I felt bad for him but he could of kept Kennedy's policy of withdrawing from the war yet instead of marching on.I know we wanted to win that war but the problem was South Vietnam not doing their part and the North didn't want deals. They wanted the whole Vietnam.
58,000 Americans came home in body bags. Not good for America. While our soldiers were brave, the Johnson policy didn't work. The good life was being separated from protests and violence and Johnson had to announce he was not running for another term as president. Again I felt bad for him.
History is critical to him,but I truly believed he wanted a great society for Americans. All Americans. He was right about one thing. It will be our generation to make the American city a place future generations will come not only to live, but live the good life.
I wish we would. Thanks for listening.
