JOHN'S DEATH FOR GLORY?
JOHN'S DEATH FOR GLORY?-Last year I read from the parole board for Mark David Chapman-the man who shot John Lennon Dec 8,1980 said he was seeking glory and that he deserved the death penalty for the despicable act.
The parole of course denied him for the 11th time. The 65 year old inmate expressed remorse for killing the former Beatle outside his apartment building.
"I assassinated him because he was very, very famous and that's the only reason and I was very, very, very much seeking self glory. Very selfish." He said. Looking back 40yrs called his actions creepy and despicable and thinks all the time the pain he inflicted on Lennon's wife Yoko Ono. "I just want her to know that she knows her husband like no one else and knows the kind of man he was. I didn't." He said.
JOHN AND YOKO were returning to their upper side apartment . Lennon had signed an autograph for Chapman on a copy of his recent released album 'Double Fantasy ' earlier that day.
"He was actually kind to me that day." Chapman is serving 20yrs to life. He told the board he would have no complaint if they chose to leave him in prison for the rest of his life.(Which is most likely.)
"I deserve zero, nothing. At the time I deserved the death penalty. When you knowingly plot someone's murder and know its wrong and you do it for yourself that's death penalty right there in my opinion,"he said.
THE PAROLE in denying him said Chapman committed an evil act and that they found his statement that infamy brings you glory disturbing.
Perhaps at the time he thought that when he shot John, but today was it glory? No. I'm glad he's beginning to be remorseful about it but at the same time he still killed a man and the board was right in keeping him locked up.
It's been 40yrs since that awful day. But if I were to take anything from the life of John Lennon it would be his desire for peace. There is so much violence and division that's unnecessary. To give peace a chance is a task we all must try with everyone. Just imagine a world when we can and where we don't have to print it or say it or sing it or even paint it but we just live it.
WE SHOUT OUT LOVE instead of anger. We hug not punch. We reach out with our services to lift one another. No politics,no wars. Nothing that drags our spirits down.
IN THIS DIFFICULT WORLD where what all that has happened and what is now makes peace impossible but that to me like JFK noted is a defeatist belief, but we just don't make enough effort to prove it.
BUT PEACE IS ALWAYS our profession. If it weren't true we wouldn't have at anytime mention it or preach about it. We see war and hate it therefore we must see peace and do something with it. I pray for Mark David Chapman and hope he's truly remorseful. John wouldn't hold a grudge but in fact he'd keep requesting that we all keep trying to Give Peace A Chance. That's all he ever said.
Violence has no glory, but love and peace makes a glorious life. Thanks for listening.
